Selecting the Right BUR Roof with Stonebridge
Protecting your business against the elements starts with the right roof. BUR, or built-up roofing, can benefit your property, so long as you choose the right BUR system, install it correctly, and keep up with maintenance.
Stonebridge Roofing can help with each step in this process. We are a trusted St. Louis roofing contractor that can help you choose the right BUR roof products for your business or home, install everything correctly, and maintain it so that your roof protects your property for years to come.
Benefits of BUR Roofing Systems
Also known as:
- Built-up roofs
- BUR systems
- Tar-and-gravel roofs
This type of roof is incredibly popular for buildings with low-slope or flat roofs. It’s not hard to see why, either: it can stand up to harsh weather conditions in most climates, is relatively easy to repair, and is fairly affordable.
Benefits of built-up roofing systems for commercial roofs include:
- Fire resistance
- Suitable for most climates
- Waterproofing materials
- Resistance against wind uplift
- UV resistance
- Energy-efficient properties
- Cost effectiveness
- Relatively easy repairs
Types of BUR Systems
As the name implies, BUR is built with multiple layers of materials, which can include layers of asphalt, tar, granules, and ply sheets (roofing felts). Specifically, most BUR systems start with roof insulation and/or a cover board. Next comes a base sheet layer, which is then covered with tar, hot asphalt, cold-applied adhesives, and/or a heavy stone cap sheet.
Hot Asphalt
This installation method uses alternating layers of hot asphalt and ply sheets overtop a base layer.
Cold Applied
This method utilizes cold-applied adhesives rather than hot asphalt.
Ballasted
A ballasted BUR system does not use fasteners to keep the top roof membrane secured to the building. Instead, it utilizes a heavy cap sheet of stone or a layer of thick gravel to weigh everything down.
Alternatives to BUR Systems
Modified Bitumen
Modified bitumen roofing (MBR) is a newer alternative to traditional BUR systems. It’s another type of asphalt-based roofing that uses layers of bitumen (asphalt) blended with recycled plastic or rubber and fiberglass-reinforced mats.
Single-Ply Roofing
BUR and MBR systems are both multilayered. Single-ply roofing, by contrast, is composed of a single roof membrane, using a roof coating like:
- Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO)
- Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM)
- Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
